Pick six exercises and do them in a row (as a circuit). Do each exercise for between 30 seconds and one minute, depending on your fitness level. Do two circuits.

The first number I think you need to know is your BMI. BMI stands for body mass index. It is a ratio of your height and weight. You can calculate it with a formula or find a calculator on line. I like the NHLBI calculator which you can easily find by typing those initials into a Google search box. It is a government agency that won’t try to sell you anything.

A second value that you should know is you blood pressure. This is important as abnormal blood pressure is asymptomatic - you probably won’t know you have it. It is easily measured but you should rest sitting for 5 minutes and have your arm supported when blood pressure measurements are taken. Below 134/84 is normal but that is a variable number. If you feel OK, it is not too low but definitely can be too high. Do not depend on a single reading to tell you your pressure is too high but on a series of readings, always after a brief rest with arm supported.

A pair of blood tests tell you a lot about your potential troubles. If you are over weight or obese you may have abnormally high blood sugar or glucose level. A normal fasting - no food for 8 hours - glucose level is above 60 and below 105. From 105 to 119, the level is abnormal and indicates an abnormal response to insulin. Above 120 fasting or over 200 anytime, you have diabetes. Along with abnormal glucose is abnormal cholesterol. Total cholesterol is good below 190 and HDL can’t be too high but above 45 is good. LDL cholesterol is not measured but is calculated and needs to be low. How low is controversial but less than 120 is good. I like to look at the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. Simply divide you total cholesterol by your HDL number. If the result is less than 5 you are in good shape generally. Another tool at the NHLBLI is the 10 year mortality predictor. Check it out if you know these numbers.

The last number like BMI you can get yourself. Measure your waist at the umbilicus or belly button. If you are a man, it needs to be less than 40 inches, much less actually. If you are a woman, less than 36 inches. Multiply inches by 2.54 to get the measurements in centimeters. Above these maximums and you will find many times that your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and weight are all abnormally high. You will find if you test your aerobic capacity - how far you can walk/run in 12 minutes - it is poor also.

If you have publicly treated water, then the presence of certain contaminants is pretty much guaranteed. The most popular treatment method, among public providers, is chemical disinfection to reduce the threat of waterborne illnesses.

Scientists and environmentalists debate the risk-benefit ratio of chemical disinfection, but since it’s cheap and the modern standard, it continues to be used, regardless of the risks. The most commonly used chemical disinfectant is chlorine. So, you need an under counter water filter that reduces chlorine by at least 99%.

Chlorine consumption causes digestive disorders and in children can produce anemia. But, the greatest risk comes not from the chemical itself, but the byproducts that are released when it meets with bacteria and other water dwelling life forms.

One of the byproducts is chloroform. Another is bromate. There at least 10 different disinfection byproducts in all publicly treated water. Their levels are measured and reported as TTHMs or total trihalomethanes.

Under counter water filters should reduce THMs by at least 99%, because consumption causes a wide range of illnesses, including cancer of the rectum and bladder. The compounds become airborne when cooking, so for the greatest protection, it is necessary to leave the purifier in the “on” position when gathering water to cook with.

There are only two under counter water filters on the market that reduce THMs by at least 99%. One costs $680. The other costs $143.98, when purchased direct from the manufacturer. You are probably wondering what the difference is.

The more expensive under counter water filter includes a reverse osmosis step. The other includes submicron filtration, a carbon block and ion exchange.

In order to remove cysts, which are resistant to chemical disinfection and may be present in any publicly treated supply, you need either reverse osmosis or submicron filtration. Obviously, reverse osmosis costs more. What are the benefits of reverse osmosis?

There are none. Under counter water filters that include submicron filtration provide the same protection without removing minerals that may be present in your source. Reverse osmosis removes all dissolved minerals.

Through ion exchange, the less expensive under counter water filter removes lead and other metallic particles, exchanging them for mineral ions, such as potassium. This step improves the taste and smell, while balancing mineral content and protecting you from the health hazards of lead consumption.

If you have MTBE contamination, which is present in many local supplies, as a result of leaking underground storage tanks, you actually want to buy the less expensive system. The more expensive one only reduces MTBE by 77%. The less expensive under counter water filters reduce the contaminant by 97%.

It’s a tough chemical to get out of the water, as it disperses rapidly. So, you can see how you could easily spend more for an under counter water filter that actually does less. You don’t need reverse osmosis

How do you choose a good water bottle with filter? It depends primarily on where you are going. In the deep woods, hikers need to take special precautions. Those springs that were at one time safe to drink from are no longer “pristine”. You may need a device that removes giardia or cryptosporidium cysts.

In the home, we can easily remove those hazards with the right purification device. But, until recently there was nothing to help a hiker. Now, there are solutions. They may be relatively expensive, but to avoid the risk of illness on your hike, it’s probably worth it.

What most people need when they are traveling to the office or jogging downtown is a reasonably priced water bottle with filter built out of a rugged plastic that should be able to withstand years of abuse. If it slips out of your hand, you’ll get a bounce instead of a shatter.

There are some water bottles with filters that make it a little bit harder to lose your grip. They actually have what they call the “Dyno-flex” gripper band to ensure that there is little chance of mishandling or slippage. This should offer some sense of security, and the bottle is rugged enough, that if it did somehow fall, you wouldn’t even have to worry about the filter breaking.

A water bottle with filter is not only good for taking on a run or to the gym. People can use it while commuting to and from work, or even at the office throughout the day. The water fountain is questionable place to get a drink, at best, especially, if you work in a city like DC or Baltimore.

Some companies have invested in bottled water delivery programs for their employees. But, the waters are stored in the plastic for far too long. Researchers for Consumer Reports have shown that 80% of the waters are contaminated with BPA from the 5 gallon jugs.

Water bottles with filters can also be of use to college students on the go, they would have a supply of fresh, filtered water all through the class schedule. One student could save as much as $500 per year over buying Dasani, Aquafina or another brand.

How about a water bottle with filter for people who are traveling? Unlike most portable water pitchers on the market, some of these travel companions don’t just filter out chlorine and odor. They actually block lead, which could come in handy on the road.

Of course, as I said initially, it all depends on where you are travelling to and the contaminants that you may be faced with. So, you should choose your water bottle with filter based on those contaminants. Chlorine and lead are two of the most common.

You see we drink water for many important physiological functions; water helps cells and tissues to transport important elements or compounds such as sodium and sugar throughout our body. Water also helps blood flow and provides structural cohesion and lubrication between all important body parts. It also helps control the temperature in our body.

The human body temperature helps regulate its internal environment so as to maintain a stable and constant condition. When body temperature gets too high, we’ll experience fever and ultimately heat stroke. If it’s too low, we’ll feel cold. The body’s ability to regulate its internal physiology to maintain stability in response to fluctuations in the outside environment is known as ‘Homeostasis’.

For example, perspiration has a huge effect on body temperature, especially during exercise. As we exercise, chemical reactions speed up and mechanical motion is taking place in our body. These activities produce heat energy that moves from inside the body to the outside, along the surface of the skin, carried along with our sweat, which in turn raises our body temperature. Sweating also plays a small role in keeping the amount of body fluid in homeostasis or equilibrium.

Our body is constantly seeking homeostasis; an inability to maintain homeostasis may lead to disease, a condition known as homeostatic imbalance. Diseases which result from a homeostatic imbalance include diabetes, dehydration, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, gout and any disease caused by the presence of a toxin in the bloodstream.

As you can see, our body must always maintain its equilibrium in order to function properly. Exercise and sweating definitely help our body to achieve that; that’s the reason why we’re often advised to exercise regularly.

Usually, distal subungual onychomycosis involves a considerable amount of pain if not treated immediately. If you are suffering from these types of toenail fungus, it will be very uncomfortable to wear closed shoes. In fact, it will be difficult to walk at all especially if the infection is in the more advanced stages.

By this time, the nail will have started to separate from the skin and may have even completely fallen off. In some cases, it can even emit a nasty odor because of the pus that has collected in the area. This is the most contagious variety and needs to be treated immediately to avoid contaminating the people around you.

The second most common toenail fungus is the white superficial onychomycosis. It affects roughly 10% of all people suffering from toenail fungal infections. The early manifestations of these types of toenail fungus include the random appearance of white spots or streaks on the outermost layer of the nail. This condition affects the fingernails as well.

If not attended to immediately, these types of toenail fungus can cause the nail to gradually disintegrate and turn into soft white powdery substances. However, unlike the first type, this toenail fungus will not cause the nail to fall off or separate from the skin. White superficial onychomycosis is also much simpler to cure than any other toenail contamination.

The remaining two types of toenail fungus are very rare and are found in less than 1 percent of all people suffering from toenail fungal infections. The first of these unusual types of toenail fungus is the Candida onychomycosis.

The fungus responsible for this infection is the same fungus that causes yeast infection in the mouth and the female reproductive organ. This infection is indicated by the swelling of the skin adjacent to the toenail. The toenail itself is changed into unnatural colors such as white, green or orange.

Candida onychomycosis occurs more frequently on the fingernails rather than the toenails, possibly because of the constant use of nail polish. In more severe cases, the infection can grow in more than one fingernail at a time.

Finally, the last kind of toenail fungal infection is the proximal subungual onychomycosis. This typically occurs in people afflicted with HIV. With this infection, the flesh around the nail thickens, pushing out the toenail and forcing it to separate from the skin.

In order to cure your particular condition, you first have to go to a podiatrist to determine which kind of infection you have. Each type of toenail fungus has a corresponding treatment and your doctor will be able to recommend the best kind of remedy for you.

The funnel web spider is a large brown or gray spider found in Australia. The symptoms and treatment for its bite are as for the black widow.

The brown recluse spider is a small, light brown spider identified by a dark brown violin on its back. There is no pain, or so little that usually a victim does not notice the bite. Within a few hours a painful red area with a mottled cyanotic center appears. Necrosis does not occur in all bites, but usually in 3 to 4 days, a star-shaped, firm area of deep purple discoloration appears at the bite site. The area will turn dark and mummified in a week or two. The margins separate and the scab falls off, leaving an open ulcer. Secondary infection and regional swollen lymph glands usually become visible at this stage. The outstanding characteristic of a brown recluse bite is an ulcer that does not heal but persists for weeks or months. In addition In addition to the ulcer, there is often a systemic reaction that is serious and may lead to death. Reactions (fever, chills, joint pain, vomiting, and a generalized rash) occur chiefly in children or debilitated persons.

Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders found mainly in the tropics. Most do not inject venom, but some South American species do. They have large fangs. If bitten, pain and bleeding are certain, and infection is likely. Treat a tarantula bite as for any open wound, and try to prevent infection. If symptoms of poisoning appear, treat as for the bite of the black widow spider.

Scorpions are all poisonous to a greater or lesser degree. There are two different reactions, depending on the species:

Severe local reaction only, with pain and swelling around the area of the sting. It is possible prickly sensation around the mouth and a thick-feeling tongue will occur.

Severe systemic reaction, with little or no visible local reaction. Local pain may be present. Systemic reaction includes respiratory difficulties, thick-feeling tongue, body spasms, drooling, gastric distention, double vision, blindness, involuntary rapid movement of the eyeballs, involuntary urination and defecation, and heart failure. Death is rare, occurring mainly in children and adults with high blood pressure or illnesses.

Treat scorpion stings as you would a black widow bite.

The average healthful adult should be drinking at least one eight ounce cup an hour, in order to replace fluids lost through exercise and work. The consumption of certain foods and drinks will increase your need for water. Milk, salty foods and sugary drinks can actually dehydrate you causing your body to need more water. If you are a physically active athlete, you may need more water than the average person. On hot days, you will need more, as well. However, it is important to remember, your kidneys can only work so fast so it is important not to overload them with too much water all at once because drinking too much water at once can have fatal consequences. It is called hyponatremia. As with anything, moderation is the key.

Drinking water may even actually help you with your diet. Due to the lack of water in our bodies and the abundance of dehydrating drinks, often times our thirst is mistaken for hunger. Drinking water is a good way to combat that “hunger”. Water also increases your metabolism. So, next time you are thirsty or hungry, grab a cup of water. If you are still hungry after drinking water, you will have a more accurate assessment of your hunger.

Water can also combat many headaches, body aches and improve focus. The reason being that many of these symptoms are signs of dehydration. Grab a cup of water, when you feel these symptoms coming on, you may be surprised at the results.

Water is also an excellent tool for healthy skin. Drinking water not only moisturizes skin it can also cleanse it, all from the inside out. It can reduce acne by flushing out the toxins from the skin. It can also reduce wrinkles. In nature, when something loses its moisture and becomes dehydrated, it becomes wrinkled. The same goes for your skin. If it is not getting enough water, it can also become wrinkled. Especially if you drink alcohol, use cigarettes, or caffeine, all of which can dehydrate your body. So, don’t forget to give your skin what it needs by drinking enough water, as well.
